Overview

The aim of this programme is to upskill an Architecture, Engineering or Construction graduate to be a skilled postgraduate with an understanding of the digitisation of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC), Building Information Modelling (BIM) as well as the potential of digitisation in the delivery of Sustainable Energy Systems and Policies or Facility and Asset Management. The programme will focus on professionals originating from the AEC sector to enhance skills in BIM and Information Technology (IT) to address a current skills gap in the industry.

The underlining philosophy of the programme is the enhancement and deepening of research skills in the context of BIM and digitisation. In addition to learning and developing BIM and digitisation skills, the key aspect of the Masters, through the research project, is to strengthen the graduate’s ability to identify gaps in the current knowledge and areas of future research and to undertake this research to close this gap thereby developing the student’s ability to think strategically.

Modules

What is a Module?

A module is a standalone unit of learning and assessment and is completed within one semester. A full-time student will normally study six modules in each semester; part-time and ACCS (Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects) students will have flexibility as to the number of modules taken.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a minimum of a Level 8 in civil engineering, construction, architecture, architectural technology, building services engineering, or other cognate disciplines and relevant experience in the discipline of BIM either in the level 8 undergraduate programme or in practice.

Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied BIM & Digital AEC are also eligible for entry to the programme (holders of the Postgraduate Diploma will be required to relinquish the Diploma prior to receiving the Master of Science award).

Equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning process on an individual case-by-case basis to candidates who have not achieved the above academic standard but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience.

Mature and non-standard Entrants
The University and Department facilitate non-standard entrants and the transfer of non-standard students on an individual, case by case, basis. A rigorous assessment of prior learning is carried out to establish competence and adherence to the requirements of the programme.

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is when formal recognition is given for what you already know prior to starting on a programme or module. With recognition of prior learning the focus is on learning and not on experience as such. You can apply for RPL in any MTU accredited programme or module. Programmes which are accredited by professional bodies or any external awarding bodies may have their own procedures for RPL which you should refer to.
